Let’s talk about PERIMENOPAUSE ladies! First of all it’s not TABOO and I definitely think more women should be talking about it.
If you don’t know what it is, it’s the period leading to MENOPAUSE. It can start anywhere from 12 years to a couple of months before your last menstruation. The average age for menopause is between 45 and 55 years old.
When people talk about menopause symptoms, most people are actually talking about PERIMENOPAUSE. The most common talked about symptoms are irregular cycles( super heavy or super light, sometimes lasting for weeks), migraines, hot flushes, night sweats, UTIs, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), difficulty concentrating, difficulty with memory, irritability and emotional changes (extreme anxiety, low mood).
The thing is, many of these articles don’t mention the link between DEPRESSION and perimenopause. Which is why I want to talk about it.
I’m usually super positive and consider myself to be a pretty happy person most of the time. I eat well, exercise, take care of my mind, body and spirit and I live a healthy lifestyle in general but a couple of months back, I felt myself in a low mood, very anxious and slowly slipping into mild depression. It grows on you gradually and if you don’t catch yourself early, it will pull you down into full depression mode.
A few days before my menstrual cycle was about to start, I became super nauseous all of the sudden and my body felt so off. I felt like something was trying in bring me down mentally and no matter what I did I couldn’t bring myself back up.
I’m very in touch with my body and emotions, so I connected everything together as perimenopause symptoms. I’ve also experienced a very mild form of depression before so I could catch myself early. At the time, I was quite busy with things and I wasn’t doing all of my daily rituals, plus I wasn’t eating as clean as usual. This led to my mental state not being at it’s best and leading to hormonal imbalances, which is something I work so hard to keep balanced.
I knew I had to get out of this state fast, so I went back to the tools I use to always get me back to my true self ASAP! I want to share my tips with you all, as I know it will help many of you.
7 Simple TIPS down below
1️⃣ Stop watching the news, tv shows and movies that are focused on negative topics, stop reading psychological thrillers and anything sad/depressing and just watched feel good movies and shows. Anything that goes through your eyes and ears are subconsciously effecting your mood and thoughts. You may not realize it but everything you intake, whether it’s a negative conversation you overheard or a disturbing poster you passed by, all these things effect you. Just be mindful and keep this in mind.
2️⃣ Take daily walks in nature. Luckily I live by the sea and I have some small parks nearby that I can go to easily. Walking by the sea has great benefits for your body. Nature is definitely the best medicine for your mind, body and soul. I have a tree I go to when I go on my morning walks to say hello! I hold my hands on the tree for a few minutes to let natures energy in my body and ground me. If you don’t have any parks or anywhere peaceful to take daily walks, no worries, it doesn’t necessarily have to be daily. It can be on the weekends to refresh and ground your body. Walking out side for at least 30 min and getting your vitamin D, will help your mood enormously!
3️⃣ Eat super clean. If you eat refined super, make sure you cut that out, It will make you feel super tired and disturb your hormones, plus there have been many research done to link the connection between refined sugar and depression. It also feeds your cancer cells, so STAY AWAY from refined sugar. I don’t drink anything with caffeine except a little bit in my green tea but caffeine really has an effect on your hormones. Avoid alcohol as well, even wine if you feel your hormones are off balance. I cannot stress the importance of eating a well balanced diet enough, with lot’s of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and all that good stuff.
4️⃣ Cleanse your house and yourself often. I don’t mean just cleaning (though I believe a cluttered house is a cluttered mind) but using white sage, palo santo or any other cleansing tool of your choice and get rid of NEGATIVE ENERGY or STAGNANT ENERGY. If you’re in a depressed mood and breathing out that negative energy everywhere in your house, it’s going to linger on until you get rid out it. You want your house to be full of positive energy. You can find hundreds of “Get rid of negative energy” binaural beats and music on YouTube nowadays.
5️⃣ GRATITUDE! Be grateful for everyday you have here on this beautiful earth, for every breath, for everyone in your life, for the blue sky etc… the list can go on forever!
I start each morning in my bed the moment I wake up. I say thank you for my strong beating heart, my strong lungs, all of my organs, my mouth to eat, my nose to smell, my eyes to see, my ears to hear while touching all those places, then I pat myself on the head and hug myself and say thank you for this strong, beautiful and healthy body, I love you!
6️⃣ Avoid any blue light two hours before bed. Trust me, you’ll sleep way better! Even if you think you’re sleeping fine, many studies have shown the effect of blue light and poor sleep quality. Getting enough good quality sleep is so important during these times. If you can aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted good quality sleep. The kind where you wake up feeling so refreshed and can’t wait to start the day.
7️⃣ Supplements. If you’re not getting adequate vitamins and minerals from your diet, I recommend supplementing Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin B’s, minerals (magnesium, zinc, iron) to make sure you are getting the daily intake. I also like to take Ashwaganda, which is an ancient ayurvedic herbal supplement and is an adaptogen that helps balance out stress levels. I take it in a capsule form. Another superfood/supplement I add to smoothies, baking and herbal coffee is Maca powder. It helps balance out hormone levels. Just a precaution, make sure you talk to your doctor or health adviser before taking any supplements, even if they are herbal. Sometimes they don’t mix well with certain vitamins, minerals or prescription medication and it can cause severe side effects.
A few other things I like to do that I didn’t mention above are dancing, shaking and tapping to shift my energies when I feel they are off. I also like to meditate, do yoga and take my lunch outside sometimes. Just do things that you enjoy and limit your stress as much as possible. I think stress is the number one hormone disrupter, at least in my case it is. This is why for someone like myself, my daily rituals and my alone time are extremely important to stay on track. Try different things and see what works the best for you and try to stick those.
These tips always bring me back to my true self. Even though we try so hard to eat healthy, exercise, be mindful and so on, sometimes as ladies our hormones can get out of whack. Especially when we are going through PERIMENOPAUSE or MENOPAUSE.
I hope these tips can help ease your symptoms and keep your hormones in check☑️ If you have any other tips that help you, I would love to hear them in the comments or feel free to DM me on instagram @wellnessgems
